"Every year on my dead brother's birthday, I eat cake for breakfast in the nearest graveyard and spend a few hours shooting a roll of film. These zines are each made using a different year's roll of dead-brother-birthday film. Practicing grief for the majority of my life has shaped so much about the way that I experience love. I have a tendency to love in a way that feels somewhat urgent - I was only 4 when my brother died, so my understanding of the world has been shaped by the reality that there are no guarantees around the length of time I get with those I love. At the root of my practice is a desire for connection; at the root of much of my film photography is a mourning for the absence of that connection. This work contains all of the people I have lost in some way, to death or to distance, and the longing left behind."
