"My mum was sent home from the hospital to die on Christmas Eve. In the UK, palliative care patients are sent home from the hospital with a bright red bag of “anticipatory medications” to facilitate an easier dying process. One of the medications within the bag was oral morphine, alias Oramorph. I must have stayed up for what felt like two consecutive weeks, sat in the cloying dark of that downstairs death-bedroom, topping up mum with little purple syringes full of the Oramorph whenever she was due. Lung cancer is an excruciatingly painful way to did. The half-empty Oramorph bottle haunts me from its shelf within the cluttered kitchen medicine cabinet."
