Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica)
Medicinal properties: Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) is native in temperate regions worldwide including in the Pacific Northwest, forming colonies in damp, partially shaded areas along stream banks, roadsides, ravines and at the edges of woods and meadows. Covered in stinging white hairs, nettle leaves emerge by late-March and are harvestable only until the inconspicuous bushels of tiny, greenish flowers appear mid-May (lasting into early-July). Due to large amounts of quercetin, it’s used medicinally as an anti-inflammatory and antihistamine, treating arthritis, joint pain and allergies.
