Maria Knier (WI)

Verdigris Unicorn
mixed media sculpture - stoneclay, turritella shell, acrylics (some natural clay lines in a few places)
approx. 14" x 9" x 4"

It was a dream that prompted Maria to begin sculpting what she now calls Totum Fauna. The dream continues, and now many years and many sculptures later, these pieces made from stone clay are still expressing new and evolving interpretations of natural life. Since Totum Fauna have always been based on an anthropomorphic connection between humans and animals, the use of human eyes and added natural elements are a constant in her work and a source of inspiration for her. She loves to collect things that tend to be overlooked and use them to inform the art she creates. Often the pieces are accented by basic elements such as tiny sea creature homes, twisted driftwood or lake washed roots, and other times the entire sculpture embodies the guiding forces behind the natural world. Her intent is to inspire people to see how we are all connected and to appreciate and feel the spirit of nature in everything..

Maria has been painting, drawing and sculpting as long as she can remember. She primarily loves creating work that is nature-based and quirky. Classically trained in illustration (MIAD ‘93) she has been hired by both national and international companies for her work as an illustrator along with writing and illustrating her own award winning storybooks. Most recently Maria has enjoyed focusing on mixed-media sculptures she calls Totum Fauna. Her love of nature bleeds into all aspects of her life. It is especially apparent in her art.
