No one is listening to birthing people in pain. No one believes they know their own bodies and what isn't making sense. No one except the midwives. This country is not only deep in a maternal health crisis, with BIPOC pregnant people currently suffering a mortality rate over three times higher than white (European American) pregnant people, but also a morbidity rate that continues to climb despite the fact that 80% of maternal morbidity can be prevented.
Proper postpartum care is more than the singular six week visit mothers currently are afforded (with insurance). New mothers may experience depression, which has been a steadily increasing trend over the past decade, with race and ethnic disparities continuing to be persistent. When a new mother is experiencing frayed nerves, anxiety, sleeplessness, and other symptoms, a midwife can offer tinctures made up of the bounty found in the natural world. I have collected the different flora that make up a soothing tonic for nerve support. Each is helpful in their own way, but combined, create a more powerful result for the mother. This is the first piece in an ongoing series of holistic and traditional remedies used by midwives that I am exploring.
and act as a mild sedative.
