"The Night-Blooming Cereus flowing across dilapidated skulls represent the ephemeral nature of life and how it only blooms for a short moment before passing. The flower itself is part of a cactus, a symbol of the resilience of life before it fades away. Cypress vines weave around the border of the canvas, a flower representing death and mourning in Victorian flower language. The Irish planted the cypress plant by burial grounds to protect their dead against evil, keeping their deaths sacred and natural. Cypress also represents longevity in China due to its character’s similarity to the number 100, conveying how this cycle of life, death, and fading has existed and will continue to exist until the end of time."
