Human cultivation and use of saffron spans more than 3,500 years and extends across cultures, continents, and civilizations. Saffron, a spice derived from the dried stigmas of the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus), has through history remained among the world's most costly substances. It is not only a prized culinary spice but also has a range of medicinal properties. Its active compounds contribute to various health benefits. Saffron is thought to improve mood and alleviate symptoms of PMS, depression and anxiety. It also contains antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation and protect brain cells, potentially enhancing memory and cognitive function. Saffron has been shown to reduce inflammation in the eye, helping to decrease the risk for certain eye conditions like macular degeneration. Saffron also has potential heart benefits such as lowering cholesterol and can help reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke. Saffron has also historically been mentioned for menstrual irregularities, abortion and digestive ailments.
