In the first part of 2026 I was deep in a depression - our degrading political climate, the violence against our immigrant neighbors, the continued challenges for unhoused members of our community - everything was boiling within me: fury and grief, a bleak sense that nothing could help. One day I found myself in my studio trying to organize old sketches & unfinished watercolors, and I was overcome by the urge to start destroying them. I started ripping and shredding, my frustrations finding a release in the catharsis of physical destruction. I've never worked with collage, but I felt a compulsion to start gluing the shreds of my old work to a board. Before I fully grasped what had happened, I had a beautiful explosion of layered & textured color. While the events of the outside world had not improved, my inner heart came closer to a resolved equilibrium.
