The Bonds We Choose Ourselves depicts my interpretation of the Devil card, exploring symbolism of the devil and the path of healing and awareness through shadow work. This image was also inspired by my work as a therapist and the connection of the Devil to the addiction and recovery process, through the symbol of being bound by one's own repeated patterns, and the freedom that comes from recognizing that the bonds are self-imposed and can also be removed. Another major theme in this painting is the depiction of the devil as either the false light (representing following a false prophet or teacher, believing one's own illusions), or the light-bringer (lucifer), as well as an invitation to explore the origins of the Devil as a character in Western spiritual and religious traditions.
