Connections and Perceptions: A Somatic Coaching Experience. (Formerly The Apperception Deck)

My name is Joy Walker, and I’m a somatic practitioner, writer, and maker with over 25 years’ experience in somatic and trauma therapy, health care, counseling, grief work, bodywork, and shamanic and energy work. I have always loved the way that tarot decks are tiny pieces of art in their own right; the connection that they have to Mystery, Spirit, and the Divine; and the symbolism and the individual choices each artist makes to represent sometimes traditional, tropes and concepts. They allow you to connect to your unconscious and imagination.

I created my own deck to share widely the simple somatic coaching concepts, questions, advice, and possibilities that have helped my clients the most, combined with the healing, regulating, and soothing pictures of the natural world and natural things. I find solace, inspiration and joy outdoors and in nature and I love to take photos. My eye is caught by ephemeral moments, unique angles, tiny vignettes, the grand splendor of a sunset, the way a raindrop sits on a leaf, or the way layers of wood make up a fallen stump. I meditated carefully on my years of collected photos until I found the ones that spoke to me and represented each of the 63 words/concepts in the deck, which were inspired by my work and experience with somatic education and coaching, Polyvagal Theory, Somatic IFS, grief counseling, and Nonviolent Communication.
