"I was born in Ukraine and have lived in the United States since 2006. Since the full-scale invasion, grief has become part of my daily life. It comes with every phone call home, every sleepless night following the news, every city destroyed, and every life forever changed.
Living so far away has taught me that grief is not only about loss. It is also about helplessness, distance, and carrying the weight of knowing that the people and places you love continue to suffer while you can do so little.
Layers grew out of this experience. It reflects how grief settles into us over time, becoming part of who we are. The work does not depict the war directly. Instead, it explores memory, connection, and resilience while acknowledging that grief and hope can coexist. Grief reminds us what we love, and hope gives us the strength to keep carrying that love forward."
