"This painting depicts one of the few notes that remain from my father. I implored alchemy symbolism here to depict the process of calcination (the breaking down of material to result in ash). My father, like many I have lost, was cremated, and I found the process of receiving someone I love back in a cardboard box so unceremonious. Behind the Mylar film is a photo transfer of an alchemy page depicting the process of purification.
Through painting and drawing, I explore grief as a source of suffering and transformation. I consider the act of making art as an alchemical process, drawing on practices of the philosophers to transmute my losses into something between beauty and the grotesque. I channel memory and symbolic narratives to convey the weight of my grieving. My pain finds its home in the work that I make, acting as an effective vessel for catharsis. I intend for my work to resonate with viewers who experience hardship or turmoil associated with mental health or loss, in order to feel seen in the work. Painting is my way of understanding when words alone are not enough.”
