"This piece is based on my relationship with grief and its parallels with my culture and personal experience. In Ireland, we emphasize the importance of signs as indicators of your lost loved one's presence. Since my father's passing, I have a new found appreciation for these signs.
There are multiple symbols present in the piece, the largest being the triskele. An ancient Irish emblem whose precise meaning remains a mystery. However, some believe it represents the life cycle (birth, death and afterlife). Surrounding the triskele are three robins, relating to the saying "When robins appear, loved ones are near."
The symbols are encompassed by a circular Celtic knot and surrounded by an Irish proverb "Nuair a thiocas an bás ní imeoidh sé folamh", which translates to "When death will come, he won’t go away empty". The word "loss" is written in Ogham text, referencing stone markings from Celtic times. Death takes more from you than you think. And if you are the one left behind, you will keep looking for signs hoping your loved one is still there."
