"This is a portrait of a young man raised in Rainier Beach, Seattle. Jamhal W. Keat was a victim of gun violence and a friend of my son’s; I painted his portrait with the intention of honoring his spirit and preserving his memory."

Jamhal W. Keat was killed by gun violence in Seattle, Washington, in August 2017 at the Shell gas station at Rainier Avenue and Dearborn Street.
Jamhal was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, and a cherished friend to many. He attended St. Therese and O’Dea High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball for many years. Jamhal loved music and was on his way to becoming an audio engineer at the L.A. Recording School.
Jamhal’s compassion and big heart motivated him to help others, especially his friends. He loved to travel, learn about history, and observe and experience all that life had to offer. Jamhal loved to laugh and joke, bringing light to those around him.
Jamhal was involved in what he believed to be a weapon-free street fight that tragically turned fatal. If Jamhal could offer a word of advice to other young people, it would be: “You just got to let it go sometimes. It’s not worth it.”

As he watches from above with wings on, his grandmother and mother continue to weep. Jamhal will always be loved and never forgotten.
